Versuch zum gespaltenen Regenbogen *PIC*

Hallo,

ich glaube, der gespaltene Regenbogen entsteht wirklich durch deformierte Regentropfen. Hab heut ein bißchen mit dem Gartenschlauch herumgespielt (anders erträgt man ja die Hitze nicht...) und den Regenbogen simuliert, dabei ist mir aufgefallen, daß der Regenbogen sich dann in zwei Bögen aufspaltet, wenn man den Schlauch gegen eine Hauswand hält. Je unebener diese ist, desto deutlicher auch der zweite Regenbogen.

Fotos konnte ich leider keine machen, da ich niemanden hatte, der mir mal den Schlauch hält ;o) aber jeder kann es ja selbst mal versuchen ...

Fragt sich nur, welche Prozesse sich in der Wolke letztendlich abspielen, die den Regentropfen, der ja durch die Adhäsions- und Kohesionskraft ziemlich fest zusammengehalten wird, verformen. Wind war zumindest bei meiner Beobachtung kaum vorhanden ...

Hello Claudia, Nice image1 What was the altitude of the point where the two rainbows join? Also, what was the solar altitude? I would like to try to simulate the observation using nonspherical droplets.

Hello Les,

The picture is from Benjamin Kühne and should be "only" illustrative material, so that the readers know, what I mean. I could simulate the "split" rainbow with a hose, by splashing the water against the house wall. The more uneven the wall was, was a second rainbow to be seen the clear. I do not assume therefore, who am to be looked for the cause in deformed water droplets, white however, how can developed such deformations in a cloud. Property recently so a rainbow seen, there gave it to thunderstorm, but nearly calm.

It is possible that the wall collision caused some drops to
oscillate between oblate and prolate spheroids.

Yes, that is the problem! Very large drops might oscillate
significantly because the surface tension restoring forces
in them are proportionately weaker. However, it is not
easy to see what the forces might be to sustain the oscillation.
Turbulence perhaps.
