Hallo Leute.

Ich hatte heute eine Mail vom Mark Vornhusen im Briefkasten. Dort fragt ein Buchverlag nach einem Foto von mir, das ich dem Mark für Seine Homepage zu verfügung gestellt habe, für eine neue Ausgabe eines Deutschbuches.

Sehr geehrter Herr Vornhusen,

in dem o. g. Schulbuch für den Deutschunterricht würden wir gern ein Bild
aus der Hagel-Galerie abdrucken (Hagel auf Dachfenster von Peter Broich).
Wir wären Ihnen daher dankbar, wenn Sie uns kurz mitteilen würden, ob Sie
uns hier weiterhelfen können. Wir benötigen Abdruckgenehmigung und
reprofähige Druckvorlage und würden gern wissen, wie hoch das Abdruckhonorar
wäre.

Hi Peter!

(Long time no message from me to the forum but I've been reading the messages all the time. I have moved from Amsterdam into the country, no TV and no Internet, only cows, water, birds and sunrises and sunsets. A 360 degree sky with mag 6.2 skies.
I will be visiting Terschelling again of course but since there is no real solar activity at the moment, I haven't felt the rush to travel yet. I'm mainly working on the images from the past three years, I am making a large travel exibition that hopefully will premiere at the Terschelling Oerol festival June 2003)

But as to your question: what amount to ask.
You have to question yourself first: are you merely happy to see your pic in a publication and is your photography just a hobby. In that case an amateur fee of 30 Euro would be O.K. since it is so low that you can be sure the publisher will happily pay the fee and you have the joy of being published.

In the case you consider yourself a pro, although you are not receiving a full wage from photography, then you should ask a normal pro fee.
Since meteorologic photographs (including aurora) are hard to find, a fee of 200 - 250 Euro would be normal. Asking such a fee might mean that the publisher says no, and perhaps you might want to lower your price a bit in that case. But a price of 200-250 Euro is not too much.
And if the book has a 2nd print, the same amount has to be paid again. My minimum price for any publication is 109 Euro. Why you might ask? Well, it is the rent I pay per month for my atelier in Amsterdam where I work on my pics. I have to pay that money every month and having that in mind makes it much easier for me now to ask money for my pics.

Oh well, I find it always hard to ask money for my pics, I'd rather give them away for free, but I also like to do it semi full time in the near future ....
Another example: try and remember how much you paid last time when you went to a nice restaurant with family or friends. Selling a pic to a real publication should allow you at least to celebrate it ....

Ich habe mich über das Thema mal mit einem Profi-Fotografen unterhalten. Dieser meinte, das die Amateure zu einem wesentlichen Anteil zum Verfall der Preise beitragen, in dem die Amateure Bilder umsonst zum Abdruck freigeben oder sich mit sehr geringen Gebühren zufrieden geben.

Da ist was dran. Ich denke, man sollte den Profifotografen nicht in den Rücken fallen. Ein Schulbuchverlag ist ein kommerzielles Unternehmen, das mit den Büchern (und den Bildern darin) Geld verdient. Also sollte man auch Geld verlagen.

Im übrigen muß man das Geld bei der Steuererklärung angeben, da Verlage geprüft werden und es Kontrollmitteilungen über solche Vorgänge gibt. Dafür kann man auch alle Kosten absetzen (Reisekosten, Filme, Entwicklung, technische Geräte). Meistens sind die Kosten dann höher als die Einnahmen und man muß keine Stueren bezahlen - entbindet einem aber nicht von der Angabe (sonst Steuerhinterziehung).

Ich denke 100 Euro sind OK.
