The interplanetary magnetic field has swung exceptionally strongly southwards and this will likely result in very severe geomagnetic storming. There appears to have been two separate solar wind shocks at SOHO, the first one at about 04:15 with an increase in solar wind speed from 460 to 590 km/sec. Then at approximately 05:40 solar wind speed increased abruptly from 540 to 730 km/sec and has since then increased more slowly to 970 km/sec. We can expected the planetary K index to stay in the K7-9 range for the greater part of today.
