Your english is very good and I have so little hair on my head left that it wouldn't hurt me anyway.
As to taking notes, I get so excited when I see aurora that I don't even think anymore of taking notes. Also with weak aurora I don't want to hurt my night vision.
I usually hear distant church clocks at night, they give me an indication of time since I don't want to look at a watch with lights either.
