We observed from 23UT until 04UT in a reasonable dark location but only saw hints of red glow between 02:30 and 03:45 UT.
Not very convinving because of the moon and slight watervapour.
But it was a nice night, we had a party of three. Jan den Hollander brought a small telescope and we looked at Jupiter, Saturn, some galaxies etcetera. Many metors.
no sighting

no sighting.....better say...faint aurora
Hi Jan and Jan and Jan´s girlfriend !
Sounds like you had a nice observing session.
The red glow was aurora for sure.
it was just in time with the American substorm and we may have seen the outer fringes of that brightening in the oval.
And of course it matches with Bernd´s beautiful pictures and my own sighting of that light pyramide.
Not to forget the drop to -850nT at Kiruna and -1000nT at Lycksele.
Did anyone of you three take pictures ?
I really wonder how many guys were awake that late in the night.
It was fully worth staying up that long and even calling Mark back from the land of dreams.
Good luck for the next display.
I think now we have had every possible combination of bad circumstances, like
- good aurora but clouds
- good aurora but daylight
- clear skies but positive Bz
- clear skies and good Bz until nightfall
The next one should be a good one.
Maybe from that new spot NOAA9661, which is said to have a strong delta...and the magnetogram looks really strange...mixed polarities so close to the limb, not in an east west alignment but in a north south direction. This must be a big delta. Lets see what happens.
Take care
