LAST UPDATE: 28 OCTOBER 2001, 09:40 UTC (4:40 am EST 28 October):
The arrival of the anticipated coronal mass ejection of 25 October impacted
the Earth at 03:18 UTC on 28 October and has resulted in the formation of
minor to major auroral storm conditions. Despite the near-full phase of the
moon, observations have been reported throughout much of the central U.S.
states and Canada. Auroral activity is expected to gradually decline over
the next 12 hours as the disturbance begins to wane. However, sporadic
bursts of activity may be possible beyond then due to post-storm residual
activity.
Update: A partial halo coronal mass ejection has been observed following a
large 36-degree filament eruption to the north and west of Region 9682 early
in the UTC day of 28 October.
