Black aurora is only dark patches or "dark rivers" in a bright veil that is from 40 degrees north to 60 degrees south.
Only shows after at least one hour in total darkness at high latitude.
It is quite an impressive sight: clear sky and many stars > dull sky and still clear skies > slow movement of light > no electric light needed anymore > light everywhere > dark patches and rivers detected in the sky, Milky Way invisible but stars (Jupiter) still visible setting at horizon and also in the (for me light polluted south).
