SYNOPSIS:
Active sunspot region 9830 (currently near S20W17) has matured into a
potential producer of significant energetic solar activity. A strong multiple
delta magnetic configuration has materialized over the last several days. The
area of greatest concern exists immediately on the east-side of the negative
polarity leader spot, where a strong delta exists. Analysis of the spot
complex today suggests a major M or X class solar flare may be possible
anytime over the next several days. Any major activity emanating from this
spot complex has the potential to produce enhanced levels of energetic
protons in the near-Earth space environment.
Observers interested in white-light manifestations of activity are
encouraged to pay particularly close attention to the penumbral mass on the
east side of the leader spot. There is a potential for white-light flare
activity from this spot complex.
Significant energetic activity from this spot complex may also be
associated with strong Earthward directed coronal mass ejections over the
next several days.
Persistence suggests the spot complex may continue fairly quiet.
However, the dynamics currently present in the spot complex argue in favor of
at least occasional significant energetic outbursts, beginning anytime within
the next several days.
