POTENTIAL MAJOR SOLAR FLARE WARNING

ISSUED: 10:40 UTC, 07 NOVEMBER 2002

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

SYNOPSIS:

Active sunspot complex 10180 (Region 180) has continued to grow and
evolve over the last several days. A strong delta magnetic configuration
exists in the leading spot complex of this region. A second weaker delta may
be trying to form in the northern region of the intermediate spots. Fairly
substantial new flux has emerged in the intermediate spot complex over the
last 6 hours. Some signs of intensifying magnetic shear has also been evident
within the leading spots where the dominantly east-west oriented neutral line
contains the delta configuration.

It is our opinion that this region may be capable of producing a major M
or X-class solar flare within the next several days, particularly if growth
persists. There is also a lesser but notable chance that this region may
produce a proton solar flare. Should a major event occur, there is a fairly
good probability that the event would be associated with an Earthward
directed coronal mass ejection.
