Beitrag von Michael Ellestad » 10. Aug 2014, 03:50

Hallo skywatchers,

If you all been wondering where I have been I have been out of the country in Canada where I got to see a lifetime dream come true of seeign Niagra Falls, visit Canada and the perpetual double rainbows that form in the mist over the falls. I got a TON of pics and video and some cool super wide-angle stills with the GoPro camera. I have some pic's on my blog

Hi Michael,

thanks for your travel report. Having relatives in Buffalo, NY, I was at the Falls four times already, once even in winter,* and always impressed. On the average, the flux of water at Niagara Falls is the world's highest, although sometimes surpassed by Iguaçu and Victoria Falls. I was lucky to see the latter (with rainbow for sure) under high-water conditions during my 2001 solar eclipse trip.

*as kind of a riddle, the front picture of Greenler's "Rainbows, Halos, and Glories" shows the Niagara Falls rainbow over a deep-frozen landscape behind the Falls.

Hope you get some halos on your trip too. Greetings from Germany!

Elmar

Hey Elmar!

Yep Niagra Falls are something else I sit there and think about the amount of energy generated at the falls has to be enormous!! I love the rainbows a lot. Right now am uploading video to YouTube. Did you go on Hurricane Deck at the falls on the American side? As far as halos go sadly just wimpy segments of a 22d halo and that's about it. The perpetual double rainbows stole the show
