Spring halos at Espoo / Helsinki area

during 17.4.2011 there was a decent halos visible at Espoo / helsinki area. Following halos I saw at Espoo:

-22 ring
-upper tanget arc
-lower tangent arc
-sundogs
-parts of parhelic circle
-infralateral arc

Hey Timo,


Just checked them out and you great pics there I love the halos against a deep blue sky thats not hazed over with a bunch of cirrus which commonly happens. This past friday I imaged a series of odd radius halos. Halos observed were 8, 18, 22, and 24 deg rings, 18d plate arcs and a possible lower 9 deg plate arc which appears as enhancement under 9d halo. I'd do it but the reason why I won't do it is because getting the images to show in the post is difficult other halo watchers have complained about how the ursa blogit interface is NOT user friendly. What I need to do is go to blogger.com and make my own halo observing and optics blog I've been meaning to do but have not even gotten to it.

Concerning ursa.fi, it is a real pity that it wasn't updated much at all this winter, so the problem might be running deeper. It is only by hearsay, that I took note of the possibility that the prestigious group of atmospheric optics experts running it might have effectively disbanded. Maybe they got tired from hunting rarer and rarer halos. This is is sad, as Timo's photos prove, that Finnish icy skies continue to be producing spectacular halos.

Hopefully, someone will be coming back onto the web from Suomi soon.

I noticed the same thing no one has updated the site since january I wonder whats going on it could be like you said getting tired of hunting rarer and rare halos. The way I am though even a good display of common halos is more than enough to thrill me. Seeing things like wegener and helic arcs, odd radius and elliptical halos is like a mini celebration for me. My dream is complex display with rare arcs from parry and horizontal column crystals, a pyramidal display with all odd radii rings, and plate display with a Kern arc.

That link you gave me about posting pics in the forum I can't very well cause my basic German is not good I know some words in German but can't read it.

Agree... Personnally i do not need a super-hyper-multi display to get thrilled about halos. I do not know background of "Ice crystal halos" -blog, it actually seems to have latest post on January 27 2011. One "dedicated" site would be easier to follow in my opinion, insteadt of several ones...

Hey Timo,

I got the site marko has bookmarked and he has some impressive displays from the Ski resorts. Theres a resort called Perfect North thats an hour or two away but do not know how to get there.
